Fishing school for children
Fishing is a fun way to discover nature. In Gällivare, there are many lakes, rivers and mountain waters where exciting fish wait below the surface. Maybe it will be a striped perch, a strong pike or a beautiful grayling that nibbles on your bait. Fishing is not just about catching fish – it is also about adventure, patience and getting to know nature.
What do you need to start fishing?
You don't need a lot of expensive equipment to get started. A simple fishing rod or a light casting rod will go a long way for anyone who wants to try fishing. Together with a hook, some line and a bait such as a worm or corn, you already have the most important things.
For many children, fishing is the best way to start. Then there is a float on the line that shows when a fish is near and tastes the bait. It is easy to learn and is well suited to piers, beaches and quiet lake shores.
These are good things to bring

- Fishing line and hook
- Float
- Bait, such as worms or corn

- Life jacket if needed
- Lunch bag and water bottle
- An adult to help
The fish
There are several different species of fish in Gällivare. Some are common almost everywhere, while others mainly live in colder mountain lakes and flowing waters.
The perch is often the first fish many children catch. It is recognisable by its dark stripes and red fins. The pike is larger and stronger, with a long body and a mouth full of sharp teeth. In rivers and flowing waters, there are often grayling, which are known for their large and beautiful dorsal fins. Those who fish in the mountains may also be lucky enough to catch trout or char, two species that thrive in cold and clear waters.
All fish are an important part of nature. Therefore, there are rules that help protect them so that there will be fish in the future.
How Angling Works
When you are angling, you put bait on the hook and cast it into the water. Then you have to pay attention to the float. If it starts to move, bobs, or suddenly disappears below the surface, a fish may have taken the bait.
When that happens, lift the rod gently but firmly. Sometimes the fish will latch on immediately, and sometimes it will manage to escape. It’s part of fishing – and it makes every bite extra exciting.

Waterside safety
Water is amazing, but it also requires respect. That's why children should always fish with an adult.
If you're fishing from a boat, pier, or near deep water, a life jacket is a good idea. Also, remember that hooks are sharp. Before you cast, always look behind you to make sure no one is in your way.
Safety Checklist
- Fish with an adult.
- Wear a life jacket if necessary.
- Look around before casting.
- Be careful on slippery rocks and piers.
- Handle hooks with care.

Safety comes first, especially when children go fishing.
Learn to read the water
Fish rarely occur in the middle of open water. They often seek shelter or food near reeds, rocks, docks or where a stream flows into a lake. Finding good fishing spots is a bit like being a detective. The more you learn about how fish live, the easier it will be to find them.
If the bite doesn’t come right away, don’t give up. Sometimes all you need to do is change your location or wait a little longer.
Take care of nature
A true angler shows respect for nature. Always take your trash home with you, never leave fishing lines or hooks behind, and don't disturb birds or other animals.
When we take care of nature, we help both the fish and everyone else who wants to experience the same beautiful places in the future.
