Kåkstan
Kåkstan (shanty town) is a reconstruction of Malmberget's appearance over 125 years ago.
When the mining work started up for real, and Malmberget became Sweden's "Klondyke" with the best salary in the country but with a law that no houses were allowed to be built, the workers improvised through homemade shacks with planks from pork and dynamite boxes.
The architect Jan Wikström followed preserved photographs and rebuilt the hut. It was completed in 1988 during Malmberget's centenary celebration with a grand opening, which attracted 8,000 people.
