Urban transformation

When a society changes, a new one emerges.
The urban transformation in Gällivare and Malmberget is something you can see with your own eyes. It's not about plans on paper, but about houses being moved, areas disappearing, and new neighbourhoods being built. Everything is connected to the mine.

Why is the urban transformation taking place?

In Malmberget, large-scale and industrial mining has been going on for over 100 years. The ore bodies lie underground and slope down under the community. As the mining gets deeper, the ground above is affected. This means that parts of Malmberget are no longer habitable. That is why large parts of the community are now being dismantled or relocated.

A community is being moved, step by step

This is not something that happens overnight. The urban transformation has been going on for over 50 years, but the pace has increased in recent decades.

  • Approximately 4,000 people are affected
  • Around 3,000 homes are affected
  • Schools, sports halls and other important functions must be replaced

At the same time, new homes and areas are being built in Gällivare. The goal is for everything to be ready around 2032.

From two communities to one

Previously, Gällivare and Malmberget were two separate communities, just a few kilometres apart. Now they are becoming one. When Malmberget is being wound up, people, businesses and functions are moving to Gällivare. New housing, schools and meeting places are being built there. This means that Gällivare is growing, while Malmberget is disappearing.

What is happening to Malmberget?

Large parts of Malmberget are already gone or about to disappear. Some buildings are being demolished, others are being moved, and some are being preserved to carry the history forward. It is the end of a long era, but also the beginning of something new.

A change that is noticeable in everyday life

Urban transformation affects many.

  • People need to move
  • New residential areas are being built
  • Schools and businesses are getting new premises
  • Infrastructure is changing

It is a major adjustment, both practical and emotional. At the same time, it creates opportunities to build a more modern society from scratch.

Part of a larger transformation

Urban transformation is also linked to the future of mining and industry. In Gällivare, there is an investment in new technology and more sustainable production, including by developing fossil-free iron production. This affects both jobs and how society develops in the future.

And change

The urban transformation in Gällivare and Malmberget is about change, for real.

  • One community is being wound up
  • Another is growing
  • A lot is driven by the mine

It is a process that is ongoing right now. And it is shaping what Gällivare will look like in the future.
