Quiet areas
From central Gällivare, you can reach several areas that offer quality silence! Within the municipality and Muddus National Park, there is perhaps even the quietest place you can get within a day's trip distance!
Quiet areas primarily refer to natural areas with low background noise from society. Some quiet areas may have such qualities only during parts of the year, week or day but still have value for us humans.

Below you will find the results from the areas investigated in Gällivare municipality. It consists of texts and links to several YouTube videos that describe the areas - click on the area you want to know more about.
The back of Dundret Mountain

One of the nice things about reaching the back of Dundret Mountain is not only that it is quieter as you get a bit away from the community, you also don't have to look at industrial complexes and mining facilities. The area is also one of the few in the vicinity of Gällivare where the many snowmobiles in the area do not have access.
When we visited the site, it was blowing for 15 seconds, so any noise was effectively camouflaged. However, the distance from communities and major roads means that the back of Dundret can be considered a safe place to find relaxation and tranquillity.
Investigation of the area's sound quality:
We visited the back of Dundret on June 30, it was +14 degrees, the wind was about 8 seconds and the weather was clear.
20.18 Observations start.
22.18 observations end.
No man-made sounds occurred for two hours, but then there was a strong wind the whole time.
Djävulsklyftan

With the extensive industry that is going on in the municipality, it is not easy to find quiet places in Gällivare. But if you manage to get down to the bottom of the Djävulsklyftan you will avoid most of the sounds created by humans. By approaching from the north, it is possible to reach the bottom of the otherwise difficult-to-access ravine.
Here you can take part in the microclimate that occurs in this type of terrain and find your place where you can enjoy the exciting feeling of hiding from the outside world.
Investigation of the area's sound qualities:
We visited the ravine on October 28th, it was -12 degrees, calm and clear weather.
10:00 Observations start at the car park about three km from the ravine.
11:30 arrived at the edge of the ravine. Industries and roads can be heard with a faint noise in the background. Down in the ravine, there was no community noise.
2:00 PM observations end.
Muddus National park

Muddus is one of Sweden's largest and most untouched natural areas. Here you can experience real silence. Since this is a national park, the only engine sounds you can expect are aeroplanes passing barely audible at an altitude of over 10,000 meters. But it can often take several days between these occasions, which is why the place is certainly one of Europe's absolute quietest, and perhaps the quietest place you can reach during a day trip.
If you want to unwind for longer than that, you can spend the night in one of the cabins that are available within walking distance throughout the southern part of the park.
Investigation of the area's sound quality:
We visited Muddus between 4 and 7 April. The weather varied during the three days with a couple of plus degrees as the highest temperature and minus 25 degrees at night. There was both clear weather and calm wind, and snowfall and ten meters per second.
4 April at 14.00 observations start
5 April at lunchtime; aircraft at high altitude
April 7 at 2:00 p.m. observations end
Muddus National Park is in the parts we surveyed to be considered an extremely quiet place.
Stora Sjöfallet

Although Stora Sjöfallet is a national park with a ban on most types of motor vehicles, it takes a while to find places where the noise from the roads that run along the national park's borders does not reach. We chose a place called Soldalen by the Nieras mountain, which you reach after a varied hike through several different vegetation zones. Here you have good opportunities to unwind to the sound of babbling brooks and mountain grouse, at least until the next helicopter with tourists is to be transported out into the mountains.
You look far into Sarek National Park and if you turn west, Norway is visible far away on the horizon.
Investigation of the area's sound quality:
We visited Soldalen in Stora Sjöfallet National Park on June 30th. It was +17 degrees, calm and sunny
16:00 observations start, walk from the road
18:00 humming noise from the switchgear at the hydroelectric power plant and flashes
18:41 Helicopter down in the valley
19:24 Another annoying helicopter
20:55 observations end down by the road
Nirra

Nirra is a so-called dead-ice area with ridges separating the many small lakes. The terrain is varied and at times offers extensive views of the lakes. There are rest areas and marked trails to help you find your way.
Although noise from roads several kilometres away and ore trains on the main line can be heard clearly in some places, the hilly landscape offers an environment where you can find places that are quiet and relaxing. Take the opportunity to sit down and listen to the gentle drizzle, if you are lucky enough to be here on such a day.
Investigation of the sound qualities of the area:
We visited the site on June 30, temperature + 16 degrees, overcast, 3 meters per second, light rain.
15.28 Observations start
15.45 car from the road far away
16.02 Ore train from the main line
17.30 Observations end.
There is a marked snowmobile trail in the area, so in winter, you can probably expect snowmobile traffic.
