Gällivare Wants to Grow and Attract More Residents

That’s why we’re happy to highlight people who, in one way or another, have found their way here. One of them is Mikaela Stadig, who responded to the recruitment campaign “Sweden's Best Summer Job” during the summer.

In the spring, Mikaela—who lives with her family in Stockholm—received an offer in her mailbox that turned out to be an adventure for the whole family. The message read: “Sweden's best summer job for you and your family.”

Mikaela, a trained midwife with work experience from both Skåne and Stockholm, became interested. She had always wanted to explore more of northern Sweden. When a colleague also tipped her off about the offer, she couldn’t resist the adventure any longer.

Together with her family, they packed the car for a three-week work and vacation adventure in the northern parts of Sweden—specifically, Gällivare. While Mikaela worked as a temporary midwife at Gällivare Hospital’s maternity and gynecology ward, the rest of the family enjoyed a holiday in Gällivare and the surrounding area.

It felt incredibly exciting and a bit like an adventure to get the chance to work in Gällivare," says Mikaela.

In early August, Mikaela returned home to start a permanent position she had been offered just before leaving for Gällivare.

If I hadn’t been offered a new position right before I left, the thought of staying would have been tempting. Gällivare has definitely left an impression. Both my partner and the children have really enjoyed it, and their interest in the place is strong. We’ll definitely be back—maybe as soon as next summer, and who knows, maybe even to stay," Mikaela concludes.

Together, We Make Gällivare Grow!

During March and April, Region Norrbotten ran the recruitment campaign “Sweden’s Best Summer Job” to hire healthcare and dental care staff across the county for the summer.

Nearly 70,000 people in metropolitan areas were reached with the message “Sweden’s Best Summer Job for You and Your Family”, offering free travel and accommodation for the family. The campaign used personalized letters, advertisements in trade press, and posts on the region's social media channels.

Following the campaign, 88 people were recruited for summer jobs in healthcare and public dental care across Norrbotten.
