Pack your bag correctly

Many people overpack their backpacks with items never used during the mountain hike. If you follow a packing list, you will find the hike both more fun and less gruelling.

Regardless of the length of your stay, you only need to pack the most necessary items. For more days, you also need to change your clothes more times and adapt the equipment to where you will stay overnight. Consider packing clothing made of wool or functional material, and avoid cotton textiles that trap moisture, which has a cooling effect.

In the mountainous regions of Gällivare, it is most common to spend the night outside in nature, either in a tent or mountain cabin. Here, we have compiled packing lists that work just as well for day trips as for multi-day trips.

  • Waterproof shell jacket
  • Woollen/synthetic underwear to be worn closest to the body
  • Extra socks
  • Well-worn hiking boots
  • Clean and comfortable clothes to change into, as well as extra underwear
  • Down jacket/warm sweater, hat, gloves
  • Food and drinks
  • Soap for washing, cleaning and dishes
  • Plastic bag for garbage
  • Travel pharmacy and first aid (don't forget chafing plasters)
  • Sitting or lying mat for the break
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and cap
  • Mountain area map and compass
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Pocket knife, matches/lighting steel
  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Toilet paper + small garden spade to dig a hole
  • Possibly camera and binoculars

Check which mountain huts have a shop. Laponia (Svenska Turistföreningen or Badjelánnda/Padjelanta Laponia Tourism) has its shops. The groceries may be slightly more expensive, but you can pack less heavily. For the Kungsleden trail or the Padjelanta trail, a 50-65 litre backpack is usually needed.

Complete the backpack with the following:

  • Towel
  • Travel sheet/sleeping bag
  • Change of clothes
  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Means of payment and membership card (STF/accommodation tickets)

A bigger backpack (60–80 litres) is required when staying overnight in a tent. Choose established tent sites along the trail to reduce the impact on nature.

Complete the backpack with the following:

  • Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat
  • Storm kitchen, fuel, matches/lighting steel, dishing tools
  • Groceries
  • Larger medical kit
  • Flashlight/headlamp
  • Needle, thread, and silver tape for repairs
